The KI is a world-class, cross-departmental research center comprised of 32 faculty investigators, including clinician-scientists and basic scientists from five departments: Internal Medicine, Cell Biology and Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics, and Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Extramural funding to KI faculty amounts to $10 million annually. The KI is home to the Kansas PKD Research and Translation Core Center (Kansas PKD RTCC; Darren Wallace, PhD, Director), one of three NIH/NIDDK-funded U54 PKD RTCCs that make up the national PKD Research Resource Consortium (PKD-RCC). The KI has interactions with the NCI-Designated Cancer Center and Liver Center and collaborates with other nearby entities including the KU-Lawrence, KC VA Hospital, Children’s Mercy Hospital, University of Missouri – Kansas City, and Stowers Institute for Medical Research. The KI sponsors weekly seminars on basic and clinical kidney research and hosts an annual Jared Grantham Symposium to highlight future directions in PKD research.
