The Role: Data Catalog Manager

The Team: The Data Catalog team within Data Strategy and Governance organization helps to lead fundamental organizational and operational change driving our linked data, open data, and data mining strategy, both internally and externally. The team is responsible for organizing and categorizing data assets, ensuring accurate and consistent metadata, and promoting data discoverability, machine readability, overall usability of the data catalog.

The Impact: Data Catalog efforts occur within the broader context of major strategic initiatives to extend market leadership and build next-generation data, insights and analytics products that are powered by our world class datasets. In short, the Data Catalog Manager will collaborate with stakeholders in our strategic transformation into a next generation interconnected data intelligence organization.

What’s in it for you: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Data Catalog Manager to lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive data discovery and governance strategy centered around the Data Catalog. Within the role, you will be responsible for partnering to oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of our data catalog, ensuring that it adheres to industry best practices and standards. Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of the data catalog, defining functionalities and ensuring alignment with overall data governance goals.
  • Define and implement data classification standards, taxonomies, and ontologies to establish a consistent and meaningful categorization of data assets.
  • Oversee the integration of the data catalog with existing data management and analytics tools to streamline data discovery workflows.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, business stewards, and technical data stewards to ensure a shared understanding of business terms and their usage within the organization.
  • Conduct regular audits of the data catalog to identify and address any inconsistencies or errors in the taxonomy and vocabulary standards.
  • Champion the adoption of the Data Catalog across the organization, providing training and support to users on effective data discovery and utilization practices.
  • Monitor and analyze data catalog usage patterns to identify opportunities for improvement and ensure the system is meeting user needs.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging trends and technologies in semantics, data management and data governance.
  • Champion AI technology to streamline catalog workflows for glossary creation and metadata enhancement.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as a in metadata management, information governance, or a related field; Advanced studies in Knowledge Engineering or related discipline preferred.
  • Technical Expertise: This role requires a strong understanding of semantic technologies, ontologies, and metadata management principles.  Knowledge of graph databases and SPARQL or SQL querying language required.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards and best practices for creating and maintaining business glossaries.
  • Ability to lead and mentor a team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Exposure to data catalog tools (data.world, Collibra, Informatica, Alation) and business glossary creation.
  • Understanding of the agile development life cycle and the broader Data Management discipline (data governance, data quality, metadata management, reference and master data management)
