SUMMARY OF DUTIES
In this role you will act independently of any state or local Information Systems Team outside the Disability Determination Services (DDS) as the highest-level source of technical expertise on network issues. The incumbent will be the expert on local and wide area networks, including routers, switches, firewalls, file servers, and all software used therein within the Oregon DDS. The incumbent will be expected to independently detect analyze and resolve, any problems that may threaten the integrity of either the LAN or WAN and to maintain the integrity and function of the LAN and WAN at the Oregon DDS.
The Systems Unit within DDS manages a computer system purchased by the Social Security Administration. The equipment is integrated in the federal network and is isolated from the State of Oregon computer systems. The staff, equipment and software within the DDS is not supported by the staff of any State managed computer facility. Staff in this unit must adhere to all the requirements of Social Security regarding security and network protocols. Because the system in DDS is unique and not supported by the management and technical staff of State managed computer centers, the staff have to have a greater depth of knowledge about the equipment and software, they have to exercise a broader range of independent decision making and they have to integrate the requirements of more diverse policies and rules than do the staff in other computer systems in Oregon.
Major duties include:
Customer Assistance: Hardware and Software
Monitors performance of hardware and software, diagnose communication problems, identify and implement solutions as required to maintain the existing LAN/WAN environment.
Communicatees with our federal partner (SSA) to diagnose and resolve performance problems in the LAN/WAN environment caused by software problems.
Diagnoses problems with desktop PCs, laptops, file servers, routers, switches, etc. and repair hardware as needed or report to hardware vendors regarding devices that cannot be repaired locally.
Incumbent will Install, configure, upgrade and solve problems with devices within the existing LAN/WAN environment.
Produces ad hoc reports on system performance for our federal partners and other users.
Operations: Hardware and Software
Reviews and adjusts devices and software on the LAN/WAN to deal with traffic or scheduling issues, maintains security and access through a firewall for production staff and external partners, recovers or restarts file servers as needed to deal with degrading performance and takes appropriate action to control space utilization on the network.
Monitors system performance and analyzes problems with version compatibility and controls the same.
Maintains security of the operating systems of the file servers and more broadly of the PCs throughout the office.
Installs new software as needed.
Installs new hardware, configures or reconfigures as needed to improve or maintain LAN/WAN performance, controls inventory of devices.
Controls the versions of software being used and maintains compatibility within the devices on the LAN/WAN
Construction New: Software and Hardware
Implements of new hardware or software needed to improve performance of the DDS, maintains compatibility with existing data and programs, and establishes the linkages that allow the LAN/WAN to function smoothly when the installation is complete.
Evaluates software, modifies it as necessary to maintain compatibility with the existing LAN/WAN and to assure the interfaces with our external partners continue to function.
Evaluates hardware and negotiates with vendors as needed to assure the hardware we install will perform within the existing LAN/WAN environment.
Maintains documentation of software and will participate in designing and modeling data prior to new construction.
Planning (strategic): Hardware and Software
Tracks resource utilization and projects future utilization based on proposed business changes.
Evaluates changes to wiring standards and projects performance loss or gain based on implementation of new technologies.
Evaluates new products and projects the effects of integrating into the existing LAN/WAN environment, including the compatibility of the new software with existing software or that which is expected to be in place in the future.
Analyzes new technologies to determine feasibility of implementation within the existing LAN/WAN, conducts performance analysis of new products to determine effects on resource utilization and security.
Projects data storage needs based on existing usage patterns, knowledge of storage requirements that will be present with new technologies that we are looking at acquiring and the capacity of existing facilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
General office environment with typical schedule of Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (flexibility for alternate work schedule). May occasionally be required to adjust work hours to a flex schedule based on business needs. This position is eligible for overtime.
MINIMUM QUALIFICAITONS (MQ's):
(a) Five (5) years of information systems experience in: System integration and Development experience;
OR
(b) An Associate degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field, OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field; AND three (3) years of information systems experience in: System integration and Development experience;
OR
(c) A Bachelor degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field AND one (1) year of information systems experience in: System integration and Development experience.
ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES:

Minimum four (4) years of IT Customer relations experience.
Minimum four (4) years of network infrastructure construction and monitoring.
Expert in Microsoft full suite including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access.
