The Pathologist Assistant (PA) Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the grossing area, autopsy suite and pathology operations in the morgue. The PA Supervisor works effectively with laboratory management, administrators and physicians to maintain competent staff in accordance with the VCUHS mission and vision.
The PA Supervisor is responsible for scheduling; policy development; general operational duties; training new hires and daily operation of the grossing area from specimen accessioning through specimen processing. The PA Supervisor provides technical instruction to lab personnel and residents and documents their training and competency; maintains laboratory procedure manuals and insures the regulatory compliance of these areas;and manages the technical QC/QA functions for these areas.
The PA Supervisor works in the technical capacity of a Pathologists’ Assistant, assisting pathologists with the proper grossing of accessioned surgical specimens,the preparation for and performance of human postmortem external examinations and eviscerations at autopsy and resident training. In addition, the PA Supervisor will perform specific tasks and duties under the direction and supervision of Attending Pathologists. This position coordinates with Medical Director and supervises the mandatory training of residents of the Department of Pathology.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Certified as a Pathologists’ Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or certification eligible within 3 months from date of hire into position

Current PA (ASCP) Certification
Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of 4 years of work experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant with skills in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology with at least two (2) years in leadership role.
Previous experience in histology, histology procedures and dissection.
Experience PREFERRED:
Experience as a PA working in an academic setting
Education/training REQUIRED:
Masters Degree in Science from an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Program

Independent action(s) required:
Perform independently and collaborate with Manager/Director any personnel management issues as required.
The Pathologist may delegate to the PA the responsibility for the examination/description, including color,weight, measurement and other characteristics of the tissue or other mechanical procedures for which a specific written protocol has been developed.
Troubleshoots any laboratory issues.
Perform independently routine maintenance of equipment, provision of supplies and cleanliness of work areas as needed.
Ability to work independently with direction from Manager/Medical Director as indicated.
Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):
Supervision of gross room, morgue and autopsy personnel, day to day workflow, schedules, equipment
Communicate with Manager/Director on a routine basis.
Open communication with other supervisors and staff.
Manage work schedules and work flow/TAT issues in area of responsibility.
Conduct performance evaluations for PA and other technical staff in said areas.
QC/QA reports and follow-up as indicated.
Assist with workflow as staffing indicates.
Troubleshoot issues as required.
Consult with Human Resources for performance and personnel evaluation
Additional position requirements:
On-call rotation for weekend Autopsy coverage.
