The work:

The Sybase Database Administrator (DBA) - DB2 OS/390 will be responsible for providing expert support and administration of DB2 OS/390 databases, ensuring optimal performance, availability, and security for critical corporate application systems. This role requires a deep knowledge of DB2 database management, with a focus on database design, performance tuning, and troubleshooting. The DBA will work closely with application teams to develop logical and physical database models, manage system upgrades, and resolve complex database issues. The position also involves utilizing tools like BMC or equivalent for database monitoring and management and providing training and support to application teams. The ideal candidate will be an independent worker with minimal direction, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams to ensure the successful operation of DB2-based application systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • DB2 OS/390 Database Administration: Provide expert support and administration for DB2 OS/390 databases in a corporate environment.
  • Database Upgrades and Application Support: Work closely with team members to perform product and application upgrades, ensuring smooth transitions and minimal downtime.
  • Database Design & Development: Collaborate with business and application teams to develop logical and physical database models, ensuring that they meet both functional and performance requirements.
  • Application Tuning and Optimization: Analyze, tune, and optimize database queries and performance, ensuring high availability and efficient use of resources.
  • Problem Resolution: Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues, working closely with application teams to maintain system integrity and data availability.
  • BMC/DB2 Tools Expertise: Utilize BMC or equivalent DB2 administration tools for monitoring, performance tuning, and database management.
  • Training & Knowledge Transfer: Provide training and support to application support teams and end-users in the usage and maintenance of the DB2 system and associated software.
  • Collaboration & Documentation: Work closely with other teams and stakeholders to define database requirements, document processes, and improve overall system efficiency.
  • Independent Work: Operate with minimal direction and manage multiple priorities efficiently, demonstrating strong self-management and problem-solving skills.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • In-depth DB2 OS/390 Knowledge: Extensive experience in DB2 database administration, including installation, configuration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Sybase Experience: Familiarity with Sybase and related database technologies is preferred.
  • Database Modeling: Strong experience in logical and physical database design, and in application business analysis to translate requirements into database solutions.
  • Tools Experience: Proficiency in using BMC or equivalent tools for DB2 database administration.
  • Application Support: Experience working closely with application teams to develop, tune, and maintain DB2-based application databases.
  • Problem Solving & Tuning: Excellent troubleshooting skills, with a proven track record of resolving complex database performance issues.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Team Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration between database, application, and business teams.
  • Training & Mentorship: Experience in providing training and support to team members and end-users on database systems and tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in DB2 or related database technologies is a plus.
  • Experience with BMC or similar database management tools for DB2 is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience working in large-scale enterprise environments.
