The optical test engineer R&D is a key role responsible for the management of testing needs for high performance photonic integrated circuits used in Lumentum’s portfolio of high bandwidth over distance products. These transmit and receive the highest speed over distance digital optical signals for Cloud and hyper-scale data center internet content provider and telecom networks. Lumentum optical source portfolio is also well suited to emerging applications such as AI/machine learning networks and Lidar sensing.

This role includes test development and characterization of Lumentum’s optical photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and components for both present and future products in both PLC and Si photonics material systems.  You will define and execute wafer level, chip level and product level verification plans.

You will analyze and summarize the optical component performance data to deepen understanding of the parameters which affect yield, work with local design team, key internal and external customers to establish the platform capability, support the PIC wafer fabrication facility to improve yield and performance, and interact with manufacturing teams during new product introduction.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree, M.S. PhD., in Engineering or Physics focusing on optical or O/E components, and 1-2 years of relevant experience, or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics, and 5+ years’ relevant experience in semiconductor photonic component characterization, or a combination of industry experience and advanced degree including development of optical component testing capability.
  • Computer Skills: Programming skills, or capability to develop test platforms in C#.net, VB.net, Python. Experience with SQL database management, Matlab, JMP.
  • Experience with optical testing instruments and methods for high speed components and lasers.
