Job Summary:

To provide coordination and support of the University of Mississippi Medical Center's risk management review process. To participate in the review, evaluation, monitoring, measuring and adjustment of all patient care and associated claims; participates in the development of risk minimization program.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN); Master's Degree (MSN) preferred and three (3) years of clinical experience, preferably in a teaching hospital. Experience cannot be substituted for educational requirement.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration required:  Valid RN license. Certified professional in healthcare risk management (CPHRM) by the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) by the institute for healthcare improvement within 18 months of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Knowledge and understanding of clinical organization structure, workflow, and operating procedures. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Ability to manage multiple priorities under time constraints; ability to analyze and solve problems. Understanding of cost and quality issues. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies. Decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews patient medical records and collects data for legal/risk management analysis, studies, and monitoring.
  • Conducts legal research and analyses and prepares opinions of counsel as required; anticipates and identifies legal issues in order to develop legal strategies and solutions. Guides providers on disclosure with patients followed by early resolution following a medical error.
  • Participates in planning system-wide measurement initiatives with respect to risk assessment and management. Prepares and presents biannual reports on risk management and quality indicators to the quality and safety board meeting and other forums as assigned.
  • Assists in the review of clinical practice for quality improvement and loss control; recommends appropriate corrective action; reviews for consistency, adherence to policy, and comparative level of care in all settings; inputs data and prepares reports.
  • Maintains the oversight of risk management and patient safety policies.
  • Maintains an understanding of current TJC standards pertaining to risk management; assists the university hospitals and clinics to maintain compliance with tjc standards.
  • Provides timely internal/external customer service in a cooperative, professional, and respectful manner. This includes leading the investigation and response, written and oral, to external agency inquiries regarding risk management and quality of care issues. Agencies include: TJC, Mississippi Department of Health, Patient Safety Organizations, Leapfrog, and the Mississippi Attorney General.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking.
