About the Role:

Gusto is seeking a Tax Filing Compliance professional to play an integral part in all things payroll. As Gusto scales and expands, this team is frequently called upon to help research requirements, communicate upcoming changes to internal and external customers, assist with internal testing, resolve issues, review processes, and conduct training. Primary duties of this role require individuals to confidently exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. We are looking for a new team member that is eager to  learn about new payroll compliance rules, enjoys reading and deciphering complex legislation and regulations, translating compliance rules into simple systems and processes, and can coordinate between internal teams. Prior experience with payroll systems and/or payroll tax filing are strongly preferred.  Individuals should have excellent communication skills to broadcast compliance changes to large audiences (verbally and in writing). An ownership mentality and autonomous work ethic are necessary as individuals in this role carry out major assignments in conducting the operations of the business, and independently assign and manage their workloads.

You'll have the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and play a vital role in the development and growth of the payroll infrastructure as Gusto continues to scale.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Research new payroll tax compliance rules, and track upcoming changes.
  • Document requirements and communicate to internal teams promptly; ability to effectively lead meetings and drive for results.
  • Establish metrics, prioritize new features and system enhancements using risk assessments, cost/benefit analysis, and monitor and report on our progress on metrics and goals.
  • Provide consultation or expert advice to management, and be involved in planning long or short-term business objectives.
  • Investigate and resolve matters of significance on behalf of management.
  • Identify ways to improve our systems, processes, documentation, training and communications.
  • Coordinate with federal, state and/or municipal tax authorities as needed.
  • Have a customer-service mindset, and support our customer care advocates and engineering teams with impeccable compliance research and documentation.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience with payroll systems and/or payroll tax rules and regulations.
  • Must have a strong interest in payroll requirements at the federal, state, and/or local levels.
  • Experience offering guidance and opinions to internal teams and/or customers regarding the best course of action using data and your payroll expertise.
  • Ability to handle internal and external escalations (i.e. addressing delays, questions, and other concerns with tax authorities).
  • Ability to research and translate compliance changes into process-driven documentation for operational and engineering teams.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to provide status updates to engineering and customer-facing partners.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $75,000 to $89,000/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $94,000 to $112,000/yr for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
