Overview

Reporting to the Deputy Dean for Alumni, Development, and Special Initiatives, develops and implements SOM’s fundraising strategy, oversees the Development office, manages relationships with major donors, and directs campaigns and initiatives to secure funding for SOM’s mission and growth. This role involves strategic planning, donor cultivation, team leadership, financial oversight, development communications, and significant collaboration with senior leadership and stakeholders, and significant management of a team of more than 20 people. Liaise with respective teams in Yale’s central development office. Fundraise for major school initiatives and centers/programs, and support development volunteers including those serving on advisory boards/committees for the school, centers/programs, and fundraising initiatives.

Job Duties Assigned

1. Oversees the Development team and ensures cross-functionality to maximize giving to SOM, focusing on the following areas: Individual Giving (including Major, Leadership, Annual, Reunion, and Planned Giving), Corporate & Foundation Relations, Advancement Operations and Prospect Research, Donor Relations and/or Stewardship, and Development Strategic Initiatives and Engagement.

2. Manages, mentors, and guides a team of high-level directors in their work in support of fundraising activities.

3. Works closely with senior management to develop both short- and long-term fundraising goals, including annual, capital, and campaign activity, and strategies to achieve increased gift revenue results.

4. Works with staff to develop and implement plans to carry out the school’s goals and strategies, including establishing specific activity goals for all phases of the donor/prospect life cycle.

5. Maintains and strengthens relationships with key volunteers and serves as point person for one or more advisory board(s).

6. Leads efforts to identify and cultivate new donors.

7. Maintains a portfolio of major and principal prospects.

8. Implements strategies to provide professional development for staff and to encourage their highest level of performance.

9. Promotes relationships between Yale SOM’s prospects and the Dean, other senior leaders of the school, central development staff, faculty and volunteer leaders.

10. Participates in the development of strategy and content for all development publications and events.

11. Works on major faculty initiatives and serves as the primary contact for fundraising opportunities for various groups across the school.

12. Partners with Alumni Relations on activities for the entire Development and Alumni Relations team, and identifies areas for collaboration. Helps manage the Director of Alumni Communications.

May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Skills and Abilities

1. Superior interpersonal skills and professional demeanor required to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and dignitaries in a complex, fast-paced and changing environment. Highly developed oral and written communication skills. 


2. Highly developed project management skills. Ability to deal with complex issues and sensitive situations that require confidentiality. 


3. Superior organizational skills; ability to prioritize, manage, and coordinate multiple items/projects. Ability to handle crises as well as a wide range of short- and long-term management issues.


4. A leader with a positive and can-do attitude that supports the mission of the school. Ability to represent the school well in working collegially with peers and colleagues within and outside the university.

5. Domestic and possibly international travel required.

Preferred Skills and Abilities


Bachelor’s degree and 15 years of fundraising experience including six years of experience managing/leading a team of fundraising professionals. Global orientation, experience working across countries and regions, and fluency in more than one language.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. 6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures. 7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area. 11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Seven years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
