If designing high performance structures, elegant mechanisms, and thinking about interesting product design problems is at the top of your dream job bucket list, look no further! As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Atlas Structures and Mechanisms team, you will have the opportunity to apply your passion for structures, mechanisms, and problem solving to challenging open ended design problems as we race towards developing the world’s most capable and exciting electric humanoid robot product.
Quickly navigating ambiguity, creative thinking, attention to detail, technical excellence, efficient communication, and a team first collaborative mindset are key superpowers that will lead to success. Every day you will strategize with a multidisciplinary team on the most efficient structural approach to achieving world class packaging efficiency while respecting constraints for high volume production. You will also brainstorm slick mechanisms and interfaces to elevate performance, perform the necessary analyses to gain confidence in your design, and validate your designs with bench top testing. You will also contribute to solving difficult open ended problems such as robot coverings, lightweight energy absorbing crash protection, and safety problems such as pinch points and touch safe surfaces.
You will work closely across a large multidisciplinary team to dream up the highest performance mechanical designs that will enable an electrifying next generation Atlas robot.
How you will make an impact:
Interpret open-ended project requirements and distill into pragmatic sets of specifications for new designs
Collaborate with multidisciplinary stakeholders and teammates to dream up, design, and develop prototype robots to achieve ambitious design targets
Develop new concepts and perform analysis on designs while considering constraints from multiple disciplines with a product-oriented focus
Create CAD models, drawings, specifications, assembly documentation, and test plans for parts and assemblies
Troubleshoot issues, determine root causes, design and implement corrective and preventative solutions
Manage and work with outside vendors for components and assemblies that require outsourcing
Expertly manage more than one project concurrently while still meeting deadlines
High level of technical communication proficiency
Adapt quickly to changing project needs with a team first mindset

BSME and 5+ years of relevant experience or MSME with 3+ years of experience
2+ years of experience in a professional and product-driven environment
Including but not liminted to designing of mechanisms, high performance, production friendly, structures, flexures, compliant energy absorbing structures, etc.
Advanced CAD user (Catia, NX, Solidworks, etc.), including FEA and topology optimization
A working knowledge of ASME drafting standards including GD&T, (Y14.5-2018)
Transitioning early designs to products [NPI, EVT, DVT]
Design for casting, sheet metal, stamping, hydroforming, composites, compliant structures, foam, etc. is preferred.
Soft skills: creative and team first thinking, excellent attention to detail, strong technical communication
