Job Summary
Plans, implements, communicates, supervises and evaluates all aspects of protective services and security operations of the Memorial Hermann Health System with an emphasis on workplace violence prevention. Position manages the system-wide Security Department finances while planning, developing, training, implementing and guiding goals and objectives. Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies and complies with Memorial Hermann Risk Management protocols.
Job Description
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Health Care Administration or related field is required to provide the depth of knowledge necessary to lead and direct a very large healthcare system security department. Master’s degree related to one of the above disciplines is preferred
Licenses/Certifications: Certification by the American Society for Industrial Security as Certified Protection Professional (CPP)or certification by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety as Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA).
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- Age Requirement: Must be at least 21 years of age
- Former law enforcement experience is not required
- Prefer 10 + years of experience with managing hospital system security operations
- Experience directing large healthcare system security operations is desired
- Financial management experience required
- Broad understanding of hospital security operations and emerging security technologies
- Exercises keen judgment and demonstrated leadership abilities
- Communicates effectively orally and in writing. Able to present to MHHS leadership and conferences.
- Demonstrated ability to direct, motivate, train, supervise and evaluate personnel
- Previously managed a security services training and certification program, including weapons and de-escalation training.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Develops, coordinates, guides and provides leadership for the strategic future planning of each Memorial Hermann Unit Security Department.
- Administers compliance with all regulatory agency requirements related to system security, including Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, “Environment of Care” Standards.
- Develops and administers annual Memorial Hermann Security budget
- Is the Executive Security liaison to each Memorial Hermann Hospital’s management team.
- Envisions, recommends and implements system-wide security programs, workplace violence prevention initiatives, policies and standards.
- Coordinates centralized leadership for a system-wide emergency/disaster response for facilities/operations.
- Administers all business, financial and legal obligations necessary to maintain an effective Memorial Hermann Healthcare System Security Division.
- Administers the recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System Security staff and management.
- Oversees the development of effective communication tools and practices to assure that Memorial Hermann System Security programs are consistently applied at each hospital unit.
- Conducts ongoing and special Healthcare evaluations of all Memorial System Security Department management operations
- Oversees the operations of the MHHS weapons program including firearms and taser programs.

Nature and Scope:
- System Security is a division of Memorial Hermann. The purpose of the division is to provide security services/loss prevention; investigation, response to security incidents and protection of corporate assets and employees to facilitate the delivery of quality patient care within Memorial Hermann 17 hospitals and numerous outpatient facilities and those medical office buildings owned or leased by the Memorial Hermann.
- The System Executive, System Security is directly responsible for ensuring that the goals and objectives of Memorial Hermann are understood and adhered to by all Security employees. The incumbent accomplishes his responsibilities through close coordination with senior administrative operations staff and campus security teams at each facility, and through delegation of responsibilities and authority to the System Regional Security Directors, senior officers, team leaders and managers at each security unit. The incumbent, working with the System Regional Security Directors, as well as, senior officers, team leaders and managers at each security unit, is responsible for departmental operations and personnel matters pertaining to the employment, training, termination and grievances of security employees.
- The System Executive, System Security participates in the development of and administers the security program of each hospital through campus security’s senior officers, team leaders and managers at each unit. The incumbent works with his direct reports to analyze cost and work schedules, sets priorities, and expedite implementation. The System Executive analyzes vendors, technology, oversees system security assessments and makes technology, physical barrier and employee staffing recommendations at campuses and facilities based upon industry guidelines including crime statistics, square footage, physical constraints and other mitigating factors.
- The System Executive, System Security participates in and represents Memorial Hermann in Security/Loss Prevention and Emergency Response/Civil Defense and disaster preparedness and recovery programs.
- The System Executive participates as part of a consultant network to provide Memorial Hermann-affiliated regional hospitals with security/loss prevention, emergency response and civil defense expertise.
