Position Description

This position supports pricing for the Group Benefits Life/Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) products for employer groups with 1,000+ employees.  This is an opportunity to assist in pricing of nonstandard cases, special projects, setting target levels, experience monitoring, op plan etc.  Other primary responsibilities will be opportunities to support Association and Accident & Health pricing within Group Benefits.

Opportunities:

  • Interact with both actuaries and non-actuaries in a team-based environment.
  • Learn about Life/AD&D pricing from the case specific to whole book of business level.
  • Own individual projects and see them through from start to finish.
  • Support various Life/AD&D business lines and assist on case pricing and rate adequacy
  • Multiple presentation opportunities to senior leaders in Actuarial and other departments via Retiree Buy-Outs, Targets, and strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Work with and assist Underwriting on Life/AD&D case pricing to optimize profitability and market competitiveness.
  • Develop/revise pricing tools used by actuaries and underwriters to improve pricing accuracy and efficiency in Life/AD&D businesses.
  • Support Pricing Targets – assist in review of internal and external data to assess book assumptions for pricing tools used for 1000+ employee case pricing, analyze historical manual rate and claims experience to determine pricing actions.
  • Support ad-hoc pricing requests, including pricing Retiree Buyouts and Survivor Income Benefits.
  • Life/ADD Actuarial Mailbox -  Partner with Underwriting to determine appropriate risk charges on a case-by-case basis. Examples include developing pricing for unique cases/benefits like Retiree Buy-Outs and Survivor Income Benefits, and completing industry surveys related to pricing and profitability.
  • Support Strategic Initiatives such as:
  • Work on ad-hoc analysis related to current events like COVID and Excess Mortality
  • Own the Portability experience review and recommend pricing action if needed
  • Support Supplemental Life enrollment initiatives.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience with an analytical focus.
  • Experience assessing risk and knowledge of group pricing and rating techniques preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills, including strong Excel/VBA/Access skills.
  • Database experience with R or other similar programming language preferred.
  • Experience participating in cross functional projects, influencing and driving results for both actuarial and non-actuarial audiences.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and general business management skills are imperative.
  • Intellectually curious and strong desire to further one’s knowledge of the current Group Benefits landscape.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$78,960 - $118,440
