About the Team
We are a small, independent engineering team within Elsevier, with members located in Bosnia and the United States. Our diverse team operates with autonomy in decision-making and collaborates closely with colleagues and stakeholders across the organization. We are responsible for maintaining and extending one of Elsevier’s leading nursing health education web application products. As innovators in nursing education, we empower faculty to create their own quiz questions or leverage extensive content and assessments, fostering engaging, focused learning experiences that contribute to improved patient care.
About the Role
We are seeking a Software Engineering Lead to guide a small team of 3–4 engineers in developing, maintaining, and enhancing our web application built with Angular and Node.js. You will provide technical leadership, set development standards, and ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong leadership, and the ability to foster a collaborative team environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, promoting best practices in coding, testing, and deployment.
- Architect and oversee development of Angular front-end features and Node.js back-end services.
- Design scalable, high-availability systems using Angular, TypeScript, Node.js, Express, and MariaDB.
- Promote and implement test-driven development (TDD) and ensure comprehensive code quality coverage.
- Participate in planning, sprint grooming, and technical decision-making in an Agile/Scrum environment.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Conduct code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices.
- Support the team in troubleshooting complex bugs and maintaining system stability and performance.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- 2+ years in a leadership or mentoring role.
- Proven experience leading small engineering teams in a collaborative environment.
- Deep expertise with Angular 8+, TypeScript, Node.js with Express, HTML/CSS, and MariaDB.
- Experience in RESTful API development.
- Strong analytical skills and effective communication across distributed teams.
- Ability to analyze complex issues and guide the team toward effective solutions.
- Demonstrated commitment to TDD and high-quality code practices.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and tools like Git, GitHub, JIRA, and Confluence.
