Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Backup and Restore Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead the transition of backup and recovery systems from an incumbent service provider to internal operations. The SME will ensure a seamless handover of all backup and restore operations, optimize the configuration of backup platforms, and maintain business continuity during and after the transition. This role demands expertise in enterprise backup tools, data recovery strategies, and process automation across a diverse IT landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

Transition of Backup and Restore Systems:

  • Lead the transition of backup and restore services, tools, and processes from the incumbent service provider to in-house teams.

  • Develop and execute a detailed transition plan with clear milestones, risk management strategies, and timelines to ensure minimal disruption to backup operations.

  • Collaborate with the incumbent provider to gather documentation, system configurations, backup schedules, and restore procedures.

  • Conduct comprehensive knowledge transfer sessions with internal teams, ensuring they are equipped to manage and maintain backup and restore services post-transition.

  • Ensure the successful migration of backup infrastructure and processes, preserving full operational functionality.

Backup Tool Installation, Configuration, & Optimization:

  • Oversee the installation, configuration, and optimization of backup tools such as Veritas NetBackup, Veeam, Commvault, IBM Spectrum Protect, or other enterprise-grade solutions.

  • Customize backup policies, schedules, and configurations to meet the organization's data protection requirements and service level agreements (SLAs).

  • Integrate backup systems with various IT infrastructure components, including physical, virtual, and cloud environments (AWS, Azure, etc.).

  • Document backup configurations, schedules, and restore procedures to ensure consistency and reproducibility across the organization.

Backup & Recovery Operations:

  • Ensure backup operations are running efficiently, and data is protected across all platforms, including servers, databases, applications, and cloud environments.

  • Implement proactive monitoring and alerting mechanisms to ensure backup jobs are completed successfully, and failures are promptly addressed.

  • Manage restore processes to ensure data can be recovered quickly and accurately in the event of data loss, corruption, or disasters.

  • Regularly test recovery procedures to validate the integrity of backups and the effectiveness of disaster recovery plans.

Incident Management & Troubleshooting:

  • Act as the lead technical expert for troubleshooting backup and recovery issues, ensuring prompt resolution with minimal impact on business operations.

  • Address issues such as failed backup jobs, storage limitations, and system performance bottlenecks, ensuring a timely response to incidents.

  • Develop and maintain incident management protocols, including escalation procedures and post-incident reviews for continuous improvement.

Collaboration & Knowledge Transfer:

  • Work closely with IT, storage, and database teams to ensure backups are configured appropriately and are aligned with infrastructure and data storage policies.

  • Provide training and mentorship to internal teams, ensuring they are equipped to manage and maintain backup and recovery operations after the transition.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for backup-related inquiries, offering technical guidance and support to cross-functional teams.

Process Automation & Optimization:

  • Identify opportunities to automate backup and recovery processes, streamlining tasks such as job scheduling, monitoring, and reporting.

  • Optimize backup storage utilization by implementing strategies such as deduplication, compression, and tiered storage.

  • Continuously evaluate and improve backup performance, ensuring that backup windows, retention periods, and storage requirements are met efficiently.

Compliance & Data Protection:

  • Ensure that backup and restore operations adhere to internal data protection policies, compliance regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA), and industry best practices.

  • Maintain proper access controls, encryption, and security standards within backup environments to safeguard sensitive data.

  • Work closely with audit and compliance teams to ensure that backup and restore procedures meet all regulatory and internal audit requirements.

Vendor Management & Licensing:

  • Manage relationships with backup tool vendors to obtain technical support, troubleshoot issues, and stay updated on product enhancements.

  • Oversee tool licensing, ensuring compliance with vendor agreements and managing license renewals or expansions as needed.

  • Evaluate new technologies and backup solutions to recommend improvements and enhance the current toolset.

Job Qualifications (Must Have Skills)

Must be an Australian Citizen, and a security clearance is desirable. 5+ years of hands-on experience in managing and optimizing backup and recovery systems for large-scale enterprise environments. Proven experience leading the transition of backup environments from external service providers to internal teams. Strong knowledge of enterprise backup tools, including Veritas NetBackup, Veeam, Commvault, IBM Spectrum Protect, or similar. Experience in managing data protection across physical, virtual, and cloud environments (AWS, Azure, etc.).

Job Qualifications (Preferred Skills)

Expertise in backup policies, retention strategies, and scheduling in large-scale environments. Hands-on experience with disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution. Familiarity with backup storage technologies, such as tape libraries, SAN, NAS, and cloud-based storage. Strong understanding of scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) for automation of backup tasks.
