At eBay, we’re transforming the future of commerce for enthusiasts worldwide. Search is at the heart of that experience: each query reveals buyer intent, trust, and opportunity. We’re developing the next generation of smart, scalable, and progressively autonomous search experiences that assist customers in finding what they want quicker, more intuitively, and more efficiently.
We’re seeking an Engineering Manager to guide a high-performing software engineering team developing backend services and platforms for agentic and search experiences worldwide. This position suits a leader passionate about growing engineers, crafting clear technical direction, and working in an environment where engineering quality, product impact, and team culture are valued.
Search is a fundamental element of the eBay experience. The systems developed by this team drive influential buyer journeys worldwide, shape engagement and revenue, and contribute to defining the future of discovery on eBay.
As Engineering Manager, you will lead a high-performing team that builds highly available, low-latency backend systems and APIs powering large-scale search and agentic experiences at eBay. You will mentor and develop engineers, nurture a culture of accountability, inclusion, technical excellence, and operational rigor, and make thoughtful hiring and talent growth decisions. In this role, you will direct technical strategy and delivery by guiding the architecture and implementation of scalable distributed systems using Java, Kotlin, and GraphQL. You will also enhance reliability, performance, quality, and developer efficiency. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with Product, Applied Science, Build, and peer Engineering teams to translate business priorities into technical plans and help compose the future of search and discovery.
Required qualifications
The strongest candidates for this role are technical leaders who know how to zoom in and zoom out. You can contribute meaningfully to architecture discussions, unblock teams, and ask the right questions, while also crafting clarity, building trust, and helping people grow.
You care deeply about engineering quality, but you also know that great teams are built through strong culture. You value psychological safety, honest feedback, shared ownership, and continuous learning. You build an environment where the best ideas can come from anywhere and where teams can move fast, collaborate well, and improve constantly.
