Your new role

Here at Hitachi Rail, we have a unique and exciting opportunity a Functional Architecture Engineer.  Working in collaboration with engineering in Japan and Italy. Hitachi’s Global Business Management System (GBMS) details the rolling stock requirements management, and Design and Platform Development processes that are shared across the three organisations. Projects are broken down into specific work package areas. These enable the business to manage rolling stock projects across its design and manufacturing functions using a standardised approach.

Depending on the project, its scope, and stage within the V-lifecycle, as a Functional Architecture Engineer, you may be expected to carry out or contribute to the following activities as required, with respect to your work package area

Support bids and develop product platforms:

  • Provide bid support for new rolling stock projects including requirements evaluation, pre-concept design development, technical document production, budget forecasting, etc.
  • Develop and evaluate Operability Concepts, system, Network and Control architectures.

Supports the Project developments:

  • Support the creation and development of System Requirement Documents (SRD’s) for third party suppliers.
  • Ensuring the completion of design activities to meet the required interface-freeze deadlines.
  • Review FRACAS from reference train systems to ensure projects incorporate identified changes into the project.
  • Produce Functional Requirement Specifications, such as:
    • Vehicle Requirement Specifications
    • Vehicle Operating Modes
    • HV, MV, LV and Control functional Requirement Specifications
  • Produce Functional Test Specifications, including Vehicle Test Requirement Specifications.
  • Develop/evaluate Interface Control Documents.
  • Produce/compile drawings, schematics and models, and architecture document.
  • Produce design documentation to support the Safety and Approvals team, to achieve all relevant approvals.
  • Produce design documentation to demonstrate compliance with the customer specification.
  • Release areas of EBOM owned by the technical area through the GPLM promotion request process
  • Operate GPLM change process where items within the technical area are subject to problem reports and change requests.
  • Provide support to all other functions in the areas of your technical competence.

Engage with internal and external stakeholders:

  • Be fully engaged on supplier selection, monitor, and review all technical documentation received against requirements.
  • Engage with customers to respond to design open items.
  • Provide support at the build & testing phase, inclusive of onsite site support if necessary.
  • Provide support to OS&M during initial warranty period.

About you

  • Previous experience in a design and/or systems engineering role is desired.
  • Good knowledge of System Engineering and requirement-based design are required.
  • Ideally able to demonstrate rolling stock background & experience.
  • Knowledge of the UK/EU railway operations, Engineering and standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with electrical schematics and wiring drawings.
  • Commitment to working as part of a team. Eager to contribute, support and promote a proactive mindset.
  • Strong communications skills, ability to engage with various stakeholders, including customers, in a multicultural environment.
  • Cultural awareness.
  • Safety-first mindset.

As a Functional Architecture Engineer, use of the following tools may be required:

  • DOORs
  • Microsoft Visio
  • GPLM Windchill
  • CAD packages
  • Proprietary software/simulation tools
  • SAP
  • System modelling tools (i.e. Matlab)

Desired Requirements / Qualifications

  • Awareness of a modular and platform design.
  • HNC/D minimum qualification
  • Ideally, working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Knowledge of Train Control and/or Network (i.e. Ethernet, TRDP, etc.)
