Job Description Summary:

Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment.

Postdoctoral scholarship is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor, participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in the University’s Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars, have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.), and candidates should have strong communication skills to write and present to a scientific audience.

Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze data, write and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications, and supervise graduate students.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Design and conduct hands-on experiments utilizing cell lines, and human clinical samples including blood, tissue and primary tumor cultures.

  • Develop and validate sEV-based detection system for cancer early detection and disease monitoring.

  • Isolate sEVs and analyze by immunoassays and immunoprecipitation to prioritize candidate exo-proteins for the cancer “fingerprint” that can differentiate specific types of cancer.

  • Establish transcriptome of tumor-associated sEVs. Define EV-associated mRNA/miRNA signatures that have the greatest stability and reproducibility as analytes to diagnose and track disease burden.

  • Perform research techniques in a laboratory setting

  • Demonstrate ability to develop independent lines of research.

  • Identify, analyze and summarize relevant literature.

  • Write manuscripts and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Undertake collaborative research and work closely with laboratory members.

  • Supervise and train research personnel in the project and within the laboratory, including graduate students, technicians, and/or summer students.

  • Write effectively, gather data for reports and grant proposals, generate reports and contribute to the generation of grant proposal.

  • Develop independent research grant proposals.

  • Learn and apply new skills appropriate to conduct necessary tasks.

  • Utilize Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Prism GraphPad, and Image J.

  • Assist with overall maintenance of lab.

  • Additional duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

Education: PhD or MD/PhD in cellular/molecular biology or related field.

Work Experience:

  • Experience in cancer research (e.g., epithelial ovarian cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors), extracellular vesicles (focused on small EVs).

  • Experience giving presentations in both technical and lay forums.

  • Experience devising and articulating a research plan with defined goals, and design sound experimental strategies with appropriate controls.

  • Experience producing research to a high publication standard.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Expertise in tumor biology and/or molecular cancer genetics and prior experience in typical molecular biology techniques, including EV purification and characterization, fluorescent/confocal microscopy (ICC and IHC), EV labeling and tracking, flow cytometry, protein analysis (Western blot, ELISA and IP), cell culture, NGS, qRT-PCR, DLS, NTA, Affy microarrays, NanoString nCounter profiling, digital spatial profiling, etc.

  • Experience in immunoassay-based or other validation platforms to validate EV proteins in clinical samples.

  • Record of initiation and/or participation in successful collaborative research projects.

  • Technical expertise in proteomics and transcriptomics.

Skills: Collaborative and management skills will also be greatly beneficial.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
