Events & Signals Platform (ESP)
The ESP we are responsible for collection, processing, and distribution of events & signals across streaming platforms. The operational dealer and distributor for data & their goal is to up level their ability to distribute said data with quality on the streaming services: Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+. We implement reliable, high-throughput services and pipelines for gathering information about our users and delivering personalized experiences. You will be responsible for designing, building, and deploying a robust observability platform that leverages our existing telemetry infrastructure to provide deep insights into data quality and enable proactive anomaly detection across billions of events daily. Your leadership will shape the technical direction, foster a collaborative environment, and set the standard for engineering excellence in our new location.

Job Summary:
We are looking for a Senior Product Development Engineer I who is passionate about developing high performance platforms.

To be successful in this role, you need effective communication and collaboration skills, a passion for learning and trying new things, and a strong foundational understanding of programming and computer science.

As a member of our team, you will apply your knowledge and skills to help us deliver scalable, performant, maintainable, and testable software.

What to bring

  • 5+ years of related experience in large-scale, highly available Java services utilizing various database and messaging technologies.
  • Strong programming skills in Java and other object-oriented languages, and a strong grasp of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, databases, etc.).
  • Experience using source control systems and CI/CD pipelines.
  • An ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of emerging technologies and trends.
  • Recommends and implements solutions for the technical integration and implementation.


Responsibilities:

  • Execute the design, architecture, and implementation of a new observability platform.
  • Integrate the observability platform with existing telemetry systems to enhance data quality monitoring and anomaly detection.
  • Establish best practices for software development, testing, deployment, and operational excellence within the new team.
  • Champion a culture of continuous learning and improvement, ensuring the team stays at the forefront of observability and data engineering technologies.
  • Identify and solve complex technical challenges at massive scale, ensuring the platform's reliability, scalability, and performance.


Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience building and scaling production-grade software in Java.
  • 3+ years of consistent record with implementing or maintaining large-scale streaming platforms
  • Experience in developing and operating observability platforms, including metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting.
  • Ability to take ownership and responsibility for the software development lifecycle, from conception to deployment and operations.
  • Good technical leadership and mentorship skills
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in streaming data applications like Apache Flink, Apache Kafka, or similar technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services (specifically, Kinesis, MSF, Dynamo, ElastiCache, Lambda, Cloudwatch, Datadog).
  • Experience in software engineering within large enterprise environments, with expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and cloud infrastructure technologies such as Terraform, AWS, Kubernetes, and Spinnaker.
  • Understanding of data quality principles and anomaly detection techniques.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
  • Knowledge of data products and platforms, including Spark, Parquet, Athena, Databricks.
  • Experience in setting up and scaling engineering operations in a new office or region.


Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience.
  • 7+ years experience.
