The Opportunity:
The Medical Science Liaison team director will manage a field-based team of MSLs, each with a specific territory of responsibility, and two regional Medical Science Liaison managers. The director will also consult with and coordinate efforts with the MSL team managers OUS. The MSL team director is the medical / scientific voice of expertise for Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) products and therapeutic areas. This field-based role focuses on medical & scientific engagement with ADC stakeholders in the West Region of the United States. Provides medical / scientific expert advice / guidance to key customers for ADC products & relevant therapeutic areas, including scientific exchange & professional development with key thought leaders / external experts and provides medical / scientific affairs support to the US commercial team.
The MSL team director serves to support the scientific credibility of ADC with established and emerging national & regional thoughts leaders, by supporting scientific dialogue and collaboration in areas of research, scientific publications, and medical & scientific exchange, including unsolicited requests for medical information. The director will interface regularly with appropriate US commercial team members. They maintain a high level of knowledge to ensure credible dissemination of scientific information and dialogue with thought leaders, healthcare providers, and healthcare organizations.
The director of the MSL team will plan the strategic vision for the MSL team in the US, coordinate efforts with the MSL teams OUS, and provide ongoing updates to leadership.
What you will do:
- Provides scientific and medical leadership to the MSL team to ensure professional and credible relationships with thought leaders and external experts of strategic importance to ADC in the US and coordinate efforts with MSL teams globally.
- Ensures a strong medical and scientific presence for ADC in key academic centers by facilitation of research and educational initiatives, while supporting requests for medical and scientific information on products or areas of therapeutic interest to ADC.
- Works collaboratively and cross-functionally with other in-field leadership and teams while retaining functional independence and consults regularly with MSL team managers OUS.
- Serve as a point of contact within the medical and scientific affairs team for thought leaders and external experts within an assigned geographic area to satisfy their needs for scientific knowledge in a therapeutic area and, when requested, relevant ADC products, to support their safe, effective and appropriate use.
- Has oversight of delivery of credible presentations on scientific matters to health care providers, individually or in groups (meetings, clinical sessions, etc.), where requested, with the focus on Tier 1 and 2 thought leaders; and provides guidance to the regional MSL team managers in the US.
- Reviews and participates in the selection process to identify appropriately qualified thought leaders ADC would wish to engage in collaborative efforts – such as educational and advisory roles (Advisory Boards, Congresses, Symposia, etc.) while ensuring a high level of scientific or educational integrity in these collaborative efforts.
- Attend relevant scientific meetings and conferences, US and globally. Manages the staffing of the medical affairs area of the exhibit booth at US scientific meetings and congresses, will serve as the single point of contact for the medical affairs section of all the US conference booths and as a consultant for the OUS teams. Ensures that the MSL team develops summaries of key data and other scientifically relevant information to inform ADC strategic priorities and initiatives.
- Review of key thought leaders / external experts with scientific and technical support for publications of scientific or medical interest.
- Ensures that all activities and interactions of the MSL team are conducted with due regard to all applicable local and national laws, regulations, guidelines, codes of conduct, company policies and accepted standards of best practice.
- Collaborates with the US Medical Director and the Medical Outcomes Managers as required for support of IDNs
- The MSL team director will report to the Director, Global Scientific Affairs
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in a health sciences field, with minimum of 3 years’ experience of people management
- Preferred, Advanced degree (e.g. Pharmacy, Nutrition, Nursing, M.S. or PhD) or in a relevant scientific discipline
- Minimum 8 years in a health sciences field, and 3 years people management

The base pay for this position is
$127,300.00 – $254,700.00
