About the Role:

Remitly’s  EMEA Data Protection Officer (DPO) will help Remitly meet our goals in leading the industry in customer privacy and will help meet Remitly’s obligations under the European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The DPO reports to Remitly’s Technical Governance, Risk, and Compliance Leader and directly to EU and UK Boards. The DPO monitors compliance and data practices internally to ensure the business and its functions comply with applicable requirements under the GDPR. The DPO oversees programs encompassing staff training, data protection impact assessments, and internal audits, among other areas. The DPO also serves as the primary contact for supervisory authorities and individuals whose data is processed by Remitly.

As a Principal Privacy Manager, you will also contribute to the implementation of a centralized global privacy program that strives to fulfill our Privacy program vision of bringing peace of mind to our customers by handling their information with transparency and respect. Your role will involve a high degree of collaboration with members of our Legal, InfoSec, Operations, Compliance, HR and other teams.

The DPO will have resources and direct access to the CISO and other executives to accomplish their tasks.

You Will:

  • Act as DPO for Ireland and other EMEA countries, as may be required, including alignment of global DPO functions. DPO responsibilities are aligned with Article 39 of GDPR. 
  • Monitor Remitly’s compliance with the GDPR and member state data protection laws and policies, including reviews and ongoing monitoring of privacy impact assessments and other relevant data protection activities. 
  • Participate in the EU and UK entity's executive-level Risk Controls Committee and similar board or committee reporting on privacy matters. 
  • Serve as point of contact for internal and external inquiries (data subjects, customers, regulators) about Remitly’s data protection and privacy policies and practices, including the exercise of data subject rights. 
  • Maintain expert knowledge in the areas of privacy and data protection, including assistance in developing innovative solutions to simplify privacy processes. 
  • Monitor the program and as needed advise on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and Third-Party Risk Assessments.
  • Monitor the program and as needed provide support for responses to Data Subject Requests (‘DSRs’) and support Incident Management. 
  • Assist with regular horizon scanning to keep up to date on key developments in data protection.

You Have:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in privacy, data governance, or information security.
  • Experience engaging with external parties on data protection issues (regulators, customers, industry associations, etc.).
  • Experience working through others with all levels of the organization and with cross-functional teams. 
  • Strong understanding and experience with international privacy laws, with an emphasis on GDPR, including frameworks and standards relied on by regulatory bodies.

Even Better:

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, information systems, a related field, or equivalent
  • CIPP/E or similar privacy certification 
  • Experience with finance, technology, and/or privacy regulation in a high growth company
  • Experience with data privacy and inventory tools
  • Experience with or familiarity of NIST-P framework
