Job Summary
The Director of School Safety is responsible for the overall planning, development, implementation, and administration of safety and emergency preparedness programs across the school campuses. This role ensures that all safety protocols, emergency operations plans, and security measures are up-to-date and in compliance with state and federal regulations. The Director will support the implementation of school safety programs on campuses to include school resource officers and school safety officers. The Director will coordinate with local law enforcement and fire departments, and manage safety training and emergency drills for administration, students and staff. The Director of School Safety will play a critical role in fostering a safe and secure learning environment, ensuring that students, staff, and visitors are protected and prepared in case of emergency. This position is essential to supporting the well-being of the entire school community and requires a proactive and dedicated approach to school safety.
Key Responsibilities
Emergency Preparedness
Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive emergency operations plans (EOP) for the campuses, including lockdowns, evacuations, and emergency shelter procedures.
Regularly review and update EOPs to align with state and federal regulations and best practices.
Conduct risk assessments to identify and mitigate safety hazards on school property.
Coordination and Liaison
Serve as the primary liaison with local law enforcement, fire departments, emergency management agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
Build and maintain relationships with local law enforcement, fire departments, and other community safety organizations to enhance security and response readiness.
Facilitate communication and coordination between school resource officers, school safety officers, and campus administrators.
Participate in trainings, conferences, and coalitions focused on school safety
Oversee Emergency Operations Committee
Training and Drills
Develop and oversee safety training programs for admin, staff, students, and parents, ensuring that all stakeholders are prepared to respond effectively in emergency situations.
Coordinate with the campuses to schedule and conduct regular safety drills, including fire, lockdown, and severe weather drills, ensuring compliance with state requirements.
Evaluate and adjust drill procedures and response protocols based on lessons learned from previous drills and real-life events.
Contribute to the school-wide discipline program by supporting the administration in implementing bullying prevention policies, providing educational resources, reviewing threat assessments, and promoting Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
Implementation of School Safety Grant: School Resource Officers (SROs) and School Safety Officers (SSO)
Support school resource officers and school safety officers assigned to the campus, ensuring alignment with school safety grant requirements and network goals fostering positive relationships between SROs, SSOs, students, and staff.
Collaborate with SROs and SSOs to develop student engagement programs aimed at building a safe and inclusive school environment.
Safety Compliance and Fire Inspections
Ensure that all campus buildings meet local fire code regulations and coordinate with local fire authorities to conduct annual inspections.
Address safety violations and recommendations from fire inspections, implementing corrective actions as necessary.
Maintain records of inspections, drills, and safety audits, ensuring accurate documentation for state compliance.
Incident Response and Reporting
Act as the primary point of contact for crisis situations, coordinating with law enforcement and first responders, as well as internal stakeholders, to manage and resolve emergencies effectively.
Investigate safety incidents and near misses, documenting findings and implementing corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
Prepare incident reports and present findings to the superintendent, identifying trends and recommending changes to improve overall campus safety.
Resource Allocation
Recommend and procure safety equipment, technology, and supplies necessary for effective emergency response and day-to-day operations.
Performs all other related duties, as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Education, or a related field (or 5+ years in law enforcement).
Experience in school safety, law enforcement, or emergency management, preferably in a K-8 or educational setting.
Proven experience in developing and implementing emergency operations plans and managing safety programs.
Must be able to obtain and hold a valid IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card at all times
Skills
Excellent knowledge of state and federal safety and emergency regulations impacting K-8 education.
Familiarity with state-specific school safety laws and mandates
Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across diverse groups.
Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure..
Physical and Travel Requirements
Local, in-state travel required. In-state visits weekly or more as needed.
Availability for on-call response to campus emergencies and urgent incidents.
This position requires the need to lift objects (up to 25 pounds) on occasion.
This position may require sitting for long periods at times, talking on the phone, standing, kneeling, stooping and long periods of concentration.
