Job Summary

Sam Schwartz, a TYLin company, is seeking a full-time Director of Transit, MidAtlantic region, to be based in our Washington DC office. This position will be part of a dynamic team that provides a range of planning services for public, private, and non-profit clients. This is an in-person position, though successful candidate may work from home on certain days with permission from manager.

This position will be focused on developing the transit planning practice for Sam Schwartz in the Washington DC market, including managing transit planning projects, developing staff, creating business opportunities, and submitting written proposals. The successful candidate will have experience with (two or more) of the following: transit service development, comprehensive operations analyses, bus rapid transit planning, corridor studies, tactical mobility lanes, emerging mobility planning, zero emissions bus planning, and transit agency strategic plans.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

The selected individual will perform various tasks, such as: 

  • Leading an interdisciplinary team on a variety of transit planning projects 
  • Writing and reviewing technical reports and developing presentations 
  • Understanding and interpreting data analysis results to drive development of recommendations and solutions  
  • Managing project budgets and schedules 
  • Developing a growth strategy for the transit practice in the Washington DC market.
  • Managing client relationships 
  • Identifying new business opportunities and supporting business development 
  • Representing the company at industry events 
  • Leading proposal development and interview presentations
  • Developing and implementing internal processes that make the work product better 
  • Active involvement with relevant industry organizations and participation in conferences and other industry events  
  • Authoring thought leadership (articles, blog posts, etc.) on these topics 

Skills and Qualifications  

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualities: 

  • Entrepreneurial, enthusiastic, collaborative work style  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively 
  • Proficiency in using spreadsheets to interpret data and conduct complex analysis  
  • Experience managing transit planning projects 
  • Transit planning experience in two or more of the following additional areas: 
    • Transit service development
    • Comprehensive operations analyses/bus network redesigns
    • Bus rapid transit planning
    • Corridor studies/tactical mobility lanes
    • Emerging mobility planning
    • Zero emissions bus planning
    • Transit agency strategic plans 

Requirements 

Candidates must meet the following requirements: 

  • Ten years’ experience in the transportation planning field, including three years’ experience managing planning projects
  • Bachelors degree in urban planning, transportation engineering, or related field; Master’s degree is preferred. 
  • AICP or PE certification is desirable but not required.
