The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The Safety and Health Auditor (United States) is responsible for executing occupational safety and health compliance and management system audits in alignment with the audit program’s defined processes and standard work. This role applies safety and industrial hygiene subject‑matter expertise to evaluate conformance with regulatory requirements and internal expectations, identify risks, and support continuous improvement. The position contributes to a culture of openness and transparency by objectively communicating findings, escalating critical issues, and supporting effective corrective action management.

As the Safety and Health Auditor (United States), you will have the opportunity to collaborate with teams across the organization. You will make an impact by:

  • Planning and conducting occupational safety and health audits across U.S. operations, applying established protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Using safety and industrial hygiene subject‑matter expertise to assess compliance with OSHA standards, hazard control programs, industrial hygiene monitoring, emergency preparedness, machine safeguarding, and related safety systems.
  • Preparing clear, objective audit reports and ensuring timely distribution to business partners and leadership.
  • Collaborating with the audit program manager, auditors, and safety and health SMEs to maintain and enhance audit protocols based on regulatory changes, industry practices, and internal needs.
  • Evaluating documentation, conducting interviews, and performing on‑site verification to assess compliance and risk.
  • Supporting the scheduling and coordination of audit activities with site and business partners.
  • Using internal audit systems to document findings, track corrective actions to closure, and report status updates.
  • Performing periodic analysis of audit trends and providing insights to business partners and senior leadership.
  • Escalating critical safety and health risks, systemic issues, or barriers according to audit program processes.
  • Maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge of U.S. occupational safety and health requirements and related changes.
  • As needed, managing the planning, scheduling, and resource coordination of consultant‑led audits in Canada and LATAM.

Your Skills and Expertise:
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related safety and health discipline (completed and verified prior to start).
  • Five (5) years of occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or safety and health auditing experience in manufacturing, industrial, or chemical industry environments.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • 7+ years of safety and health or industrial hygiene experience.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulatory requirements and safety management system elements.
  • Prior auditing experience (internal, external, or third‑party).
  • CSP, CIH, or other relevant safety and health certifications.
  • Experience collaborating with cross‑functional or global teams
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report development.
  • Experience analyzing large data sets, including use of pivot tables or similar tools.
  • ISO 45001 Lead Auditor or other safety and health auditing certifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and meet audit deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to analyze regulatory and technical information and form well‑supported audit conclusions.

Work Location: Remote
Travel: Up to 50% domestic travel; occasional international travel may be required

Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).

Responsibilities of this position may include direct and/or indirect physical or logical access to information, systems, technologies subjected to the regulations/compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws.
