Responsibilities:
The Director of Academic Technology Services provides strategic guidance and operational support for academic technologies used in teaching and learning across the university. This role manages the overall administration of the university’s Learning Management System (Canvas), video LMS (Echo360), Watermark Course Evaluations, Turnitin, and other associated applications to ensure alignment with the academic mission. The Director develops and implements onboarding and continuous support for students, faculty, and staff to ensure successful use of Mercer’s academic technologies. Reporting to the Teaching and Learning function in the Provost’s Office and collaborating with Information Technology and academic units, the Director ensures that technology initiatives meet the institution’s educational goals while fostering a culture of innovation, accessibility, and excellence.
Duties include:
Manage and oversee the university’s academic technologies, including Canvas, Echo360, Watermark Course Evaluations, Turnitin, and other tools.
Serve as the overall administrator for the LMS and associated systems.
Supervise the LMS Administrator and act as a backup to ensure continuity in system operations.
Collaborate with IT and AV personnel regarding classroom technology planning and use.
Act as a liaison between faculty, IT, and administrative units to address technology needs and provide solutions.
Participate in university and college/school committees and task forces related to academic technology and student success.
Develops and deploys online training materials. Working with the IT business analyst, builds topic-appropriate material that addresses training shortfall problem areas throughout the university.
Develop and implement comprehensive onboarding and ongoing training programs to support students, faculty, and staff to use Mercer’s academic technologies effectively.
Ensure faculty and students are fully prepared to use university academic software for classroom-based, blended, and asynchronous courses.
Monitor application analytics to identify usage trends and implement improvements.
Provide ongoing professional development for faculty and staff to effectively integrate technology applications into teaching, learning, and administrative processes.
Guide the university community regarding emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance pedagogy and student engagement.
Monitor compliance with accessibility, student identity verification, and data privacy standards in academic technology use.
Manage a computer lab and student assistants.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
A master's degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Information Systems, or a related field and three years of related experience that must include management of learning systems, instructional systems and designs, and new media design and development are required. Additionally, a minimum of two years of experience is required in academic technology leadership or a related role in educational technology, including personnel supervision.
Candidates must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the university's carrier.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to design, organize and deliver customized workshops and consultations for faculty and students.
Ability to design and produce customized instructional materials.
Ability to find and evaluate online information.
Ability to deliver engaging oral presentations to groups and classes.
Ability to use Macintosh and PC computers and related software applications.
Ability to plan, implement and manage projects and workload of subordinates.
Fluency in academic and instructional software.
Knowledge of instructional design principles and best practices for blended and online learning environments.
Familiarity with emerging technologies, including AI, and their application in academic settings.
