Operate submerged arc weld machines, semi-automatic and automatic weld machines, and hand and c02 weld all plain and alloy steel in all positions as needed.  Also, perform duties of a job code 571.

Job duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Secure job assignment and partial instruction for ordinary work, facilities and materials.

  • Follow sequence of operations including skip-welding procedures for preventing distortion.

  • Identify pieces, parts, and sub-assemblies.

  • Position and align pieces, parts and sub-assemblies for welding using jigs, fixtures, templates, simple measuring tools, etc. 

  • Stamp or tack weld as required. 

  • Obtain proper electrode and flux, set welding machine properly and weld in any position, applying weld evenly obtaining proper penetration and making required number of passes. 

  • Set up, adjust and operate automatic and semi-automatic welding machines. 

  • Clean off slag using scaling tools, etc. 

  • Burn out, arc air, chip, or grind as required. 

  • Check weld for size and defects.

  • Chip or burn out defects and reweld as required. Mark and set aside or transfer work.

  • May operate arc air machine.

  • Perform above operations on drums, pieces, parts, weldments and sub-assemblies. 

  • May perform salvage welding or overlay work. 

  • May perform more intricate work under direction of supervisor of welder setup. 

  • May grind and dress fabricated pieces and weldments.

  • Follow documented procedures, standard work, routings, and blueprints to perform safe and defect free operations.

  • Hand weld all plain and alloy structural steel in all positions.

  • Use of jib or gantry crane to manually position weld equipment.

  • Grind and dress fabricated weldments.

  • May operate forklift, scissor lift and area lift to access weldments.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of FCAW and SAW experience with 10+ years experience in multi-pass welds on heavy (1”-6”+) plate.

  • Experience with back gouging, carbon arcing or air arcing.

  • Must pass 5 weld qualification tests using FCAW large diameter wire (3/32 and .052) and SAW large diameter wire (1/8”)

Additional Information:

  • This position is located at the Caterpillar manufacturing facility located in South Milwaukee, WI.

  • 2nd shift available

  • Pay is Step 1 $30.75 Step 2 $31.94 Step 3 $33.12 hr plus an additional $1.00 shift premium for 3rd Shift

  • Full Time (40 hours, 5 days/week)
