Job Description:

Responsible for Adult and Geriatric Mental Health, Addiction Rehab, and Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on the Unity campus of Mercy Hospital, the Director provides overall leadership to nursing practice, nursing education and professional development, nursing research, nursing administration, and nursing services. Directs planning, coordination, direction and development of assigned function. Provides innovative leadership and sound fiscal and human resource management in order to maintain viable and well-coordinated quality services which are provided in an efficient and fiscally responsible manner. Holds the accountability to manage within the context of the organization as a whole, and to transform organizational values into daily operations.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Quality Care and Performance Improvement Planning
    • Promotes evidence-based practice, and excellence in patient care, patient safety and patient experience in areas of accountability.
    • Ensures continuous education, training & development to achieve optimal performance on clinical quality outcomes
    • Supports and enhances continual improvement in clinical and organizational practice.
    • Maintains effective systems and processes for establishing standards of nursing practice, nursing standards of care and policies and procedures.
    • Manages information; acquires, updates and reconciles data as needed to monitor and analyze results, and assures compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and standards.
    • Designs work processes and directs work performance to be in compliance with all rules and regulations, accreditation standards and laws that apply, specifically including billing compliance for avoiding activities that constitute fraud and abuse.
    • Evaluates the plan and its progress in relation to the attainment of outcomes.
  • People
    • Assures that employees have gained the knowledge and skills necessary to perform safely and effectively in their roles.
    • Provides direction and consultation to patient care managers to improve nursing performance and outcomes.
    • Develops best of practice and benchmark aims through partnering with physicians and staff.
    • Provides support and direction for individuals to grow and develop.
    • Is visible to employees and listens to, understands, and responds to employee concerns and ideas.
    • Develops direct reports, builds teams to achieve outcomes, and delegates well.

  • Financial Growth and Health
    • Prepares and manages the annual budget, including projecting personnel and supply costs, recommending capital expenditures in areas of accountability, analyzes and manages monthly financial performance against budget.
    • Develops, monitors & manages resources to achieve budget targets.
    • Develops with direct reports, recommends department operating budgets & ensures that the departments operate within budget.
    • Understands and is able to articulate reasons for revenue and cost variances and takes action to improve results.
    • Leads or participates in the development and implementation of business plans.
    • Reviews programs to identify potential sources of patient volume increases.
  • Organizational and Community Relationships
    • Maintains effective relationships within and between departments to effectively partner around solutions.
    • Establishes community linkages that promote learning and health improvement.
    • Collaborates with nursing staff at all levels, interdisciplinary teams, executive leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing and
  • Master's degree in nursing, business, healthcare administration or related field required, or must be actively pursuing with agreed upon completion date
  • 2 to 5 years of direct patient care experience in an acute health care setting
  • 5 to 7 years of leadership experience in acute health care setting
  • Prior Mental Health and Addiction experience is preferred


Licenses/Certifications

  • Licensed Registered Nurse - MN Board of Nursing required
