About the Position

The learning specialist plays a crucial role in the educational support system for medical students at AWSOM.  They are responsible for helping students (adult learners) optimize their learning processes and overcome academic challenges. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of medical education, learning theories, and educational technologies for adult learners.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to the Position:

• Work one-on-one with medical students to identify their unique learning styles and challenges.
• Assist medical students in developing personalized strategies to improve study habits, time management skills, and overall academic performance.
• Provide ongoing academic coaching to medical students, helping them set and achieve their academic goals.  This may include regular check-ins to monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed.
• Facilitate workshops focused on academic support, including study skills, test taking strategies, time management, note taking, leveraging AI and other technologies for adult learners.
• Develop resources for medical students, including guides, tutorials, and other materials designed to support student learning.
• Create proactive student success interventions and analyze student outcome data.
• Collect relevant programmatic data through the monitoring of trends in medical student needs.
• Support the Director of Student Affairs with the training, development, and organizing of the peer tutors.   Assist in organizing student-led review sessions.
• Collaborate with the Office of Curricular Affairs in troubleshooting specific student concerns, and as a member of an academic support team to create a remediation plan for failed coursework.
• Assist medical students in creating specific study plans for national licensing board examinations.
• Refer students as needed for tutoring, mental health or severe learning disabilities.

Required

• Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or a related field.
• Expertise in effective study strategies, time management, test-taking skills, and other academic success techniques for adult learners.
• Experience in developing and delivering training sessions and workshops for students (adult learners) and faculty

Preferred

• PhD or EdD in education, educational psychology or related field
• Prior experience supporting student learning at a medical school
