Your New Role...

Avalanche is in search of a skilled Associate Texture Artist, Environment, to enrich our creative team with a focus on texture and materials work. The right candidate will have a robust artistic vision, a meticulous eye for detail, and a passion for creating compelling and lifelike environments. Working alongside art directors, designers, and technical artists, you'll play a crucial role in bringing our rich game worlds to life.

Your Role Accountabilities...

  • Work with fellow texture artists to create a material library that follows the project’s artistic vision and is easy to use for our world builders.
  • Match the art style defined by our art directors and concept artists. Our ideal candidate is comfortable taking inspiration from multiple sources, including reference images and paint-overs.
  • Manage texture and shader efficiency for optimal performance.
  • Collaborate closely with 3D modelers and game designers to create materials that fit the architecture and gameplay needs of our levels.
  • Create documentation of processes for others to learn from and follow as needed. Encourage the sharing of ideas.
  • Process photo scans in Substance Designer for best visual results in-engine.
  • Create textures from scratch as needed. This could include workflows that start with digital sculpts or purely Substance Designer depending on the needs of the material.
  • Modify your work based on feedback received from art directors and teammates to satisfy visual, gameplay, and optimization needs.

Qualifications and Experience...

  • Familiar with modern level editor workflows such as those used in Unreal Engine, Unity, etc. Topics of note include setting up material instances and using layered systems in Unreal Engine.
  • Strong proficiency in Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Zbrush, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Ability to create proper UV layouts for assets using both 0-1 and tileable textures. Considers texel density while in this workflow.
  • Working experience with baking textures from high res meshes to low poly models.
  • Strong understanding of Physically Based Rendering (PBR) pipelines.
  • Possesses foundational art skills. Understanding of composition, form, color and light in relation to world materials.

Nice to have...

  • Photogrammetry experience.
  • Experience in development on a title set in an open world.
  • Understanding of Nanite, Lumen, and layered material systems.

How We Get Things Done…

This last bit is probably the most important! Here at WBD, our guiding principles are the core values by which we operate and are central to how we get things done. You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/  along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day.
