Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a System Administrator or Senior to join our Information Technology team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote.

What does a System Administrator do for us?

Under supervision, System Administrators analyze, install, configure, upgrade, test, document, monitor and maintain software and hardware in support of business processing requirements. Supported systems may include operating systems, business applications, server hardware, security tools, monitoring tools, Web servers, Application servers, Integration servers, and other departmental or enterprise applications or systems.

Provides technical support for problems not resolved by the Integrated Operations Center or IT Service Desk.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge & Experience in:

  • Core Windows & Server Fundamentals
  • Active Directory: Authentication, service accounts, delegated permissions, OU/GPO impacts, and security best practices
  • Networking: DNS, DHCP, IP troubleshooting, and basic firewall concepts
  • Server OS Management: Patching, local services, event logs, and performance/security tuning
  • Application Installation & Lifecycle Management
  • Service Management: Installing, configuring, and maintaining Windows-based applications and services
  • Middleware & Backend Integration: General understanding of integration concepts (APIs, REST, JSON, IIS, SQL Server connectivity)
  • Upgrade & Migration: Experience performing upgrades, applying vendor patches, and validating application functionality post-change
  • Monitoring & Troubleshooting
  • Using Event Viewer, application logs, and vendor-specific log files to diagnose issues
  • Monitoring OS and application performance; analyzing CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network utilization
  • Developing or tuning alerting mechanisms to proactively identify issues (e.g., through SolarWinds, or custom scripts)
  • Understanding how dependent systems (network, database, middleware) impact application performance
  • Security & Compliance
  • Applying least-privilege principles and maintaining strong credential hygiene
  • Implementing patch and vulnerability management at the OS and application layer
  • Managing certificates and PKI - requesting, installing, renewing SSL/TLS certificates, and understanding trust chains
  • Awareness of SOX/NERC-CIP or other regulatory frameworks (preferred but not required)
  • Scripting & Automation
  • Using PowerShell (and optionally Python or batch scripting) to automate routine tasks and administrative workloads
  • Creating repeatable, documented automation to improve operational efficiency and reliability
  • Documentation & Knowledge Sharing
  • Producing clear and concise documentation for configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures
  • Collaborating across teams to transfer knowledge and ensure support continuity
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of internal processes and knowledge bases

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with operational technology (OT) systems or utility grid applications
  • Exposure to data historians, SCADA, or power system modeling concepts
  • Experience supporting critical 24/7 systems with high availability and security requirements
  • Familiarity with Advance Distribution Management Systems. (IVVC, FEP, SCADA, etc.)

Skills in:

Preferred:

  • Project management, leadership, mentoring, and training skills
  • Scripting and code development and best practices
  • Developing and implementing new technical frameworks and work practices
  • Skilled in searching, analyzing, and building dashboards within Security Information and Event Management (SIEM)
  • Highly skilled in troubleshooting and supporting workstations and servers, software deployment, project management, and activity tracking/reporting

Ability to:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

System Administrator

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field

OR

  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer information systems (CIS), or a related field

Experience:

  • 2 or more years relevant Technology administration experience

Preferred:

  • 4 or more years of relevant Technology administration experience

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

Preferred:

  • Certification relevant to position, ITIL Foundation Certificate, Microsoft MCSA, Redhat RHCSA

Senior System Administrator

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer information systems (CIS) or equivalent field

OR

  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer information systems (CIS), cyber security or a related field

Experience:

  • 5 or more years of professional Technology administration experience.

Preferred:

  • 8 or more years of experience in a Corporate Multi-platform Technology environment

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements

Preferred:

  • Certification relevant to position, ITIL Foundation Certificate, Microsoft MCSE, Redhat RHCE, Microsoft Azure Administrator, CISSP, CCNP (Network)


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Admin - Works with regular guidance in their own area of knowledge. They will solve a range of straightforward problems, analyze viable solutions, and assess each using standard procedures.
 

Senior Admin - This position will have more in-depth technical knowledge in their own discipline. The position will have more experience with project management skills and be proficient with time management and being able to manage multiple projects at once. The position should have a college degree or equivalent combination of formal education and experience.


All levels participate in 24x7 on call rotation.
